Winter 2021/2022

Na een tevreden terugblik op het seizoen van 2021 werd het eind oktober al tijd om na te denken over het nieuwe seizoen. Een spannend jaar voor de ontwikkeling, omdat de topkandidaten van afgelopen Olympische Spelen, de zogeheten big boys, dit jaar gaan beginnen aan hun voorbereiding aan de spelen van 2024. Vorig jaar waren de resultaten mooi, dit jaar moest het echt gaan gebeuren.

Net zoals vorig jaar begon deze winter met een maand de Atlantische Oceaan over: nergens kan je zo goed de basis leggen voor onze sport als in Aruba. Vorig jaar moest ik het daar al opnemen tegen wat serieuze jongens, maar dit jaar wisten we op het water 8 jongens te krijgen die allemaal in hun eigen opzicht toppresteerders waren. In een bepaald opzicht voelde het alsof we met dit team aan een onoverwinnelijke groep aan het werken waren, dat moet alleen nog gaan blijken.

Van Aruba zelf heb ik minder gezien dan het jaar voorheen. Het was lastig tijd vrij te maken met alle andere dingen die speelden, het niveau wat je moest aantikken tijdens trainingen vergt ook dat je vaak daarna voor pampus op bed ligt. Desalniettemin voelde het als thuiskomen en zijn de kennis en herinneringen die ik ook dit jaar weer heb opgedaan goud waard.

Na Aruba werd het tijd voor iets nieuws: de Canarische eilanden zouden ons niet alleen variatie in omstandigheden brengen maar ook wat wedstrijdjes met een veld waar we maar al te bekend mee waren. We gingen niet alleen tegen elkaar gaan racen, ook de Fransen en Britten waren aanwezig. Feitelijk waren de drie sterkst presterende teams dus allemaal op één plek.

2022 iQFOiL International Games, Lanzarote

De wedstrijdjes bleken enigszins bevestigend voor wat we voelden tijdens ons verblijf in de Cariben. Niet iedereen was klaar om een potje te varen, echter, de mensen die dat wel waren wisten interessante resultaten neer te zetten. Zo was ik zelf in staat om twee evenementen achter elkaar net buiten de top 10 te eindigen, terwijl de top 10 van het WK en EK eigenlijk allemaal aanwezig waren. De derde pot maakte ik het zelfs heel bont en won ik mijn eerste evenement overall ooit! Hoewel de inschrijvingslijst wat minder aanzienlijk was dan die van de eerste twee wedstrijden is dit een resultaat waar ik toch heel erg tevreden mee ben. For everything there’s a first!

Al met al is het wederom een productieve winter geweest. De echte test komt er echter nu aan: begin april zal ik meedoen aan mijn eerste World Cup. Het zal dan kijken worden of ik ook echt wat opgeschoten ben van al die oefenpotjes. Bring it on!

After a satisfied look back at the 2021 season, it was already time to think about the new season at the end of October. An exciting year for development, because the top candidates from the last Olympic Games, the so-called big boys, will start their preparations for the 2024 Games this year. My results were good last year, but this year it really has to happen.

Just like last year, this winter started with a month on the other side of the Atlantic Ocean: there is no place where you can lay the foundation for our sport as well as in Aruba. Last year I had to compete there with some pretty serious athletes, but this year we managed to get 8 sailors on the water who are all top performers in their own way. In a way it felt like we were working on an invincible group with this team, that is yet to be seen.

I have seen less of Aruba itself than the year before. It was difficult to free up time with all the other things that were going on, the level you had to reach during training sessions also meant that I was often too tired afterwards. Nevertheless, it felt like coming home and the knowledge and memories I gained again this year are worth a million.

After Aruba it was time for something new: the Canary Islands would not only bring us variation in conditions but also some competitions with a field we were all too familiar with. Not only were we going to race against each other, the French and British teams were also present. In fact, the three strongest performing teams in IQ foil were all in one place.

2022 iQFOiL International Games, Lanzarote

The competitions somewhat confirmed what we felt during our stay in the Caribbean. Not everyone was ready to compete, however, the people who did, got some interesting results. For example, I was able to finish two events in a row just outside the top 10, while the top 10 of the World Cup and European Championship were actually all present. In fact, the third competition in Lanzarote was very tight and I was happy to win my first adult event ever! Although the entry list was somewhat less significant than that of the first two races, this is a result that I am very satisfied with. For everything there's a first!
